First of all, set the light fixtures on the installation ground which usually about 8 to 10 feet apart. Along the concrete walkway, just lay the low voltage following the light fixtures’ line. For lighting systems, you can use 14-gauge cable that total 200 watts or less. For the systems, 12-gauge cable more than 200 watts is recommended.
If there are obstacles like shrub or fence, you can string the cable around or under it. It is recommended to put first fixture from the transformer at least 10 feet away. The light fixtures should be moved out of the way by using a flat-blade shovel. Slide it underneath the grass’ top layer about 12 inches from the walking edge.
To separate grass from soil, lift up on the handle and fold over the scalped sod portion. Do this all along the walkway. To scratch a 3-inch deep trench, use the shovel’s corner blade into the soil where the wire will be placed.
Smoothing the soil over the trench is recommended but let the cable to stick up out near each fixture’s soil. Then make a slit in the sod that detached where the fixture will sit. The sod should be folded back over the soil to keep the each fixture’s cable above the grass. It is recommended not to bury the cable more than 3 inches because it will cause you a difficulty when connecting the light fixture.
The cable now can be run up to the available outdoor electrical outlet. I recommend you to cute the cable by using wire strippers and strip off the rubber insulation for ½ inch. Under the two terminal screws, you can slide the stripped wire on the transformer’s bottom. Then tighten all the screws all the way to make sure in holding the cable in place securely.
A wood stake can be driven into the ground which is next to the outlet and then screw the transformer right into the stake. Well, you can also mount it directly onto the house walls. While in use, you can lift up the cover on the outlet and then plug the transformer in.
To check that the light fixtures are equally spaces, set them back into position. It is recommended to place the first light fixture as close as possible to the edge without any hanging over part. Install a stake for light fixture in a hole on the ground that you make using a long steel punch or large screwdriver. Last but least tip, you better not to place a light within 10 feet of water feature like spa, pool or fountain.
